Knopfler was, for a few years, an English lecturer at
the Loughton College of further education where I was briefly enrolled in 1984 (not during his time)
One of our lecturers was a nice but boring little man called Bob Ives who, rumour had it had been Knopflers mate and served as manager of Dire Straits in their early days.
We asked him and he told us, "I couldn't see these denim clad folk music playing pub band getting anywhere in the punk era so I quit, but a few months later they got signed..."
So they became the biggest band in the world (at that time) and poor ol Bob was left teaching business studies in a small provincial college.
So it goes
