Police ‘don’t always have time’ to record race of grooming gang suspects, claims NPCC boss
Richard Fewkes admits there are ‘gaps’ in the data, but insists this is not down to ‘cultural sensitivities’

Police officers don’t always have time to record the ethnicity of grooming gang suspects, a National Police Chiefs Council boss has claimed.

Richard Fewkes – who is director of the Child Sexual Exploitation Taskforce – admitted there were “gaps” in the data, but insisted this was not down to “cultural sensitivities”.

His comments come as Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, announced on Thursday the Government would put up £5 million to support five initial local inquiries into grooming gangs.

In a Commons statement, she also announced a rapid three-month national audit to establish the current scale of grooming – which will focus on the ethnicity of the gangs and the “social and cultural drivers”.
