Once in the East you were a king. Exchange rate was one for one but in the East they would give you 20
ostmarks for 1 deutchemark. They could spot you a mile off cos their clothes were complete shyte and an M and S suit was like Savile Row over there. ( I tended to wear Austin Reed or Cecil Gee or Paul Smith which looked like something from Mars compared to their clothes ) in East Berlin, which looked like a giant council estate, grey , miserable , uniform, you could see all the lights etc from West Berlin which was like sin city writ large and could see the Mercedes etc zooming about when in the east there were trabants. ( the wait for a Trabant was seven years from order if i remember right )
