Piers Morgan interview: ‘Trump will win the Nobel Peace Prize in two years’
He’s riled up royals and critics alike, but the firebrand has become an expert in staying one step ahead of the outrage machine

Piers Morgan is attempting his best Donald Trump impersonation as he recalls the last time they spoke, just a fortnight ago.

“I’ve had five or six chats with him since he got shot,” he reveals, referring to the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania last July. “He just literally started the conversation: ‘Piers, it’s Donald, how are you?’ He said: ‘I’m just watching you on TV in America with Melania. And I just said to Melania, ‘Wow, he’s looking great, isn’t he? I’m going to call him and tell him how great he looks’. So I’m just calling you to tell you, you’re looking great.”

It’s the kind of starry anecdote that Morgan, who turns 60 in March, tends to revel in. “I said, ‘Mr President-elect, thank you. And may I say, I saw you on television the other day, looking great yourself’. Then we both burst out laughing. Within five minutes, he’s telling me all about his thoughts for the Middle East and about Ukraine and everything.”

Despite being the British journalist who arguably knows Trump best, having interviewed him more than 40 times, including most recently on his Uncensored YouTube show, the pair haven’t always been on such friendly terms. Morgan was highly critical of Trump’s handling of Covid, prompting the then US president to unfollow him on Twitter, now X. After the Capitol riots on January 6 2021, Morgan declared Trump “mentally unfit” to remain in the White House.

Admitting they’ve had “good times and bad times”, Morgan adds: “Nothing ever lasts forever with him in terms of fallings-out. He’s a businessman, a pragmatist at heart.”
