Met Office apologises after ‘severe’ hot weather alerts sent to phones by mistake
Notifications for high temperatures were received in areas experiencing 4C and cloudy skies

The Met Office has apologised after “severe” hot weather alerts were accidentally sent to mobile phones.

The alerts were mistakenly sent out during testing on Thursday, incorrectly warning the public of a “significant threat to life” from high temperatures.

The alerts appeared on the Apple Weather app after being sent out by a third party.

“Severe high temperatures warning,” the alert read. “These conditions started at 10.46am on Thursday 28 November.”

Users in Manchester and Windermere, Cumbria, both received the alerts despite the temperature being 4C with cloudy skies.

The Met Office, which is responsible for issuing all weather warnings in Britain, later confirmed the alerts had been removed.

There were no official weather warnings in place in the UK on Thursday night.
