Given that we live on a planet whose surface is mainly water, setting the freezing point of water as zero
makes a lot of sense.
Although of course, sea water does not freeze at zero.
The freezing point of seawater, which has a typical salinity of about 3.5%, is approximately -1.8°C (28.9°F). The freezing point can vary depending on the salinity the higher the salt concentration, the lower the freezing point.
