It was an experience going across. The babushkas who ran on the inspections really gave you a hard time. I had a moustache on my passport photo but was clean shaven when I crossed one time. They kept me for a while peering at me from different angles especially on the way back. A common thing was for Westerners to lose their passports in the east and some East German who looked similar using them to cross. The westerner would then report his passport stolen. And conveniently they always had a copy.
