The story is a little fishy IMHO. Saying that, I do enjoy listening to the bell ringing and occasional sounds of Evensong from my local church. Mind you I also enjoy the Adhan from the respective Mosques here as the sounds reverberate around the city. Up to 6 that I can make out. No 2 also is enthusiastic about living in Durham, partly because of the traditional religious aspect of the city. Or as he puts it 'no darkies'.
