The alleged attack evoked the case of Lorena Bobbitt, the American woman who chopped off the penis of her husband John Wayne Bobbitt in the United States in 1993. The couple in Italy, who are of Bangladeshi origin, had had furious rows over the 41-year-old husband’s plan to have his first wife move in with them. They had recently moved from the town of Sant’Antonio Abate to the nearby town of Angri in Campania, where the husband had found a larger house that could accommodate his two wives. While being married to more than one person is illegal in Italy, the practice exists among some migrant communities. The second wife, 35, was staunchly opposed to the idea. When the husband refused to back down, she allegedly resorted to extreme measures. She waited until he had an after-lunch nap, grabbed a kitchen knife and chopped off his member. He woke up screaming in pain, with blood gushing from the wound. He managed to stagger on to a first-floor balcony and call for help.
