Funny you should ask.
Mrs FTd's father on the right was deemed to be an intellectual (he'd been to university) and so was sent away to work in the country at a 're-education camp'.
He survived, despite hard work and not enough to eat. Many didn't.
Later, he rose to a senior position in the ministry of agriculture.
I liked him, we drank sake together.
Years later, his wife saw the coverage of the student protests in the centre of Beijing, and prepared food for the students. She took the bus to Tiananmen square and helped to give them some nourishment.
The Chinese have witnessed some tough times.
