Anxious and neurodiverse claimants can also benefit from reduced prices on luxury watches, jewellery and designer clothes through private sector schemes designed for disabled people. But a number of concessions also extend to individuals with “hidden disabilities”, such as ADHD, who are in receipt of Personal Independence Payments (PIP) – despite fears some individuals are abusing the system. One website teaches users how to cash in on “PIP Freebies”, while backers of the schemes promote the perks on social media, describing them as the “best-kept secret” in accessibility. Opponents claim that these schemes threaten to disturb the delicate balance between a welfare system that protects the truly needy and a culture that risks incentivising worklessness. It follows similar concerns over councils offering benefit claimants discounts on nights out and beach huts, as well as private companies offering money off attractions including the Tower of London, London Zoo and the Eden Project. Such discounts have also raised concerns about how much more other consumers are paying to subsidise lower costs for different groups.
