More of a racket in France than UK where many cannot make a living as barristers or solicitors. At the age of 16 or 17 when I walked out of A levels at my Catholic fascist grammar skule , I applied to be a trainee solicitor. Had a great interview and got on really well well with the guys there. Then came the question of money. We really like you they said so how about £20 per month. I was delighted. That wasn’t bad for 16 at the time. Then amongst some confusion the reality appeared. I was to pay them £20 per month. Out of the question of course. Later I had my amateur lawyer career including an appearance at the court of appeal which most lawyers never get near.
