Hmm... had the school written...
You are entitled not to participate in others religious celebrations.
However you must be respectful of these celebrations even if you are not involved in them,
This would have been a different matter altogether.
But the conflation with race is problematic because it means that there's no clear boundaries if you believe that religion is problematic and how you go about expressing that.
Like had I decided Christmas was a stupid idea and I didn't want to participate when I was 10 then I might be considered highly intelligent
The problem is there's no dialogue about these things both the child and the school's behaviour is problematic
