ADHD is over-diagnosed, say doctors
GPs claim some private providers never reject diagnosis of condition
Seven in 10 GPs believe adult ADHD is over-diagnosed, with some saying private providers never reject a diagnosis.
Long NHS waits have driven patients towards private ADHD assessments, with clinics receiving fees from both people paying for themselves and NHS-funded referrals.
Some patients pay more than £1,000 for an assessment, while others access private providers at the taxpayers’ expense through England’s Right to Choose scheme, which gives NHS patients the right to pick which provider delivers their treatment.
Family doctors estimated that more than eight in 10 patients referred for specialist assessments ultimately received an ADHD diagnosis.
One GP reported only one negative assessment among more than 1,000 referrals, while another could not recall a private provider ever declining to diagnose the condition.
Doctors raised concerns about “superficial” assessments and warned that trauma and other mental health problems could be overlooked.
The findings were published before a government-commissioned review into the rising demand for ADHD, autism and mental health services.
