Great value
Justice minister spent £34,000 on US trip during World Cup Jake Richards billed taxpayers around £24,000 for flights alone while travelling to Missouri and Illinois
A Labour justice minister spent £34,000 of public money on a trip to the US during the World Cup.
Jake Richards, the sentencing minister, billed the taxpayer for flights worth about £24,000 and accommodation costing £3,000 having visited Missouri and Illinois in July.
The minister, whose responsibilities include youth justice reform, said the aim of the trip was to learn from the “globally recognised system” in the US.
While there, he appears to have watched England’s World Cup game with Argentina – sharing a picture of himself grinning and giving a thumbs-up sign at half-time.
