Whatever the problem , tax is the answer…..
Reeves clears path for tourist tax in boost for Sadiq Khan
Rachel Reeves was poised to open the door for Sir Sadiq Khan to impose a “tourist tax” on visitors to the capital in a boost for the Mayor of London.
The Chancellor will announce in the Budget a consultation on allowing local leaders to charge a levy on overnight stays in English cities, according to Bloomberg.
Visitors will likely pay around £2 a night for stays in hotels or at venues through providers like Airbnb, although the final charge will be settled under the consultation.
Sir Sadiq had urged the Treasury to devolve city tax powers, allowing charges similar to many other major European and US cities.
There were 89m overnight stays in London last year. The think tank Centre for Cities argued that such a levy would be unlikely to cause a significant drop in visitors.
A series of likely policy announcements in the Budget emerged on Tuesday, including a milkshake tax and an stamp duty holiday for new companies listing on the London Stock Exchange.
The Treasury has been contacted for comment.
