Tax is the answer, what is the problem…
Labour ‘treating the public like fools’ over claims tax rises needed to stop shoplifting Torsten Bell - End says changes to inheritance tax will lead to more police on streets
A Labour minister has been accused of “treating the public like fools” after claiming Rachel Reeves’s tax on farmers will fund the fight against shoplifting.
Torsten Bell said the Chancellor’s changes to inheritance tax will enable more police on the streets, meaning fewer shops needing to pay for their security.
The Government has come under fire over its response to the record scale of shop thefts and continues to face criticism over its tax raid on farmers.
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: “We wouldn’t expect Labour to understand the hurt offensive comments like this have. Labour are taxing family farms out of existence, but pretending it’s about tackling their spiralling shoplifting, when the real reason is their own economic mismanagement, is completely insulting.
