Orion is magnificent in the winter sky. I remember my dad telling me about learning to navigate as a Merchant Navy officer cadet. Pointing out the 'Dog Star' (Sirius) in the night sky. One time, he brought home a sextant he had borrowed. It had once belonged to a U - Boat commander (Swastika on the label in the wooden case).
