New York millionaires are plotting their exit from the city after the election of Zohran Mamdani, the socialist who plans to increase the taxes of the rich.
Mr Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo, the former governor, on Tuesday after mounting an eye-catching campaign focused on lowering the cost of living.
His plans, which include rent price freezes and a millionaires’ tax, have struck fear into the hearts of wealthy New York residents and businesses who are now fleeing the state, according to developers.
“My phone’s been blowing up,” said Eric Benaim, a leading real estate broker nicknamed “the King of Queens”. “I was up until midnight and I’d probably received a few dozen calls and messages by 9am this morning.”
