Michael Searles Deputy Health Editor Published 14 August 2026 9:53pm BST Middle-aged men will be stripped of their right to tests that help detect prostate cancer under government plans. Men aged over 50 will no longer be entitled to a blood test to help identify the disease, with GPs instead deciding who is given one. Experts described the decision as an “outrageous betrayal”. Until now, any man over the age of 50 without symptoms has been entitled to a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test via their GP. But new guidance removes that right, instead leaving family doctors to decide whether testing is appropriate. Lord Cameron, the former prime minister, who was treated for prostate cancer after taking one of these tests, said it was a “backwards step”.
