The Metropolitan Police has now admitted it will re-investigate around 9,000 suspected group-based child sexual exploitation cases in London spanning the past fifteen years. That single number destroys the fiction that the capital had somehow escaped this national scandal. It proves something far darker: the authorities knew there was a crisis and chose to keep it buried.
For years, Sadiq Khan, Sir Mark Rowley, and the political establishment at City Hall told Londoners there were "no grooming gangs" here. They said it in the Assembly chamber. They said it in press statements. They said it to stop the questions and kill the story. It was not a mistake. It was a calculated act of self-preservation dressed up as reassurance to the public.
The truth did not come from brave leadership. It was dragged out by whistle-blowers, journalists, and the few politicians willing to be sneered at for speaking plainly. Evidence piled up in the shadows: children raped in hotels girls groomed and trafficked gangs operating with impunity. All while the Mayor stood before cameras and claimed there was "no indication" this was happening in London. The lie was maintained long after the facts were known.
On 11 July 2025, Susan Hall AM asked Khan directly whether grooming gangs were operating in the capital. Instead of answering, he accused her of "misleading" the public and repeated the line that no such cases existed. That was not caution. It was deceit. A Mayor who reads reports of children being raped in his own city and tells the public it is not happening is not safeguarding Londoners. He is safeguarding himself.
Now the Met concedes what frontline officers and victims have suffered for years: thousands of cases ignored or quietly shelved. The Commissioner warns that reinvestigating them will cost "many millions" of pounds. That is the price of cowardice – paid by taxpayers. The far greater cost was paid by the children the state abandoned.
And through it all, the dishonesty was rewarded. Knighthoods and honours handed out like shields for those who denied the truth rather than confronting it. If a title is to mean anything, it must be tied to courage and service – not silence and political spin. A man who lies about organised child rape in his own city does not deserve to keep his honour.
If City Hall had faced reality ten years ago, countless victims might have been spared. Instead, whistle-blowers were smeared, campaigners dismissed, and parents treated as nuisances. The guardians of London became guardians of a narrative – a false story maintained at terrible human cost.
Enough. A police force that hides truth until cornered cannot be trusted. A Mayor who misleads the public about the rape of children must not remain in office. Sadiq Khan must resign. His knighthood must be stripped. His reputation will not be defined by soundbites and photo-ops, but by the children his cowardice betrayed.
They told us "it isn't happening here." Now we know it was – and they knew. The cover-up is finished. The reckoning begins.
