Migrant hotels exempt from tourist tax Accommodation owners incentivised to cater to asylum seekers, hospitality industry warns Asylum hotels accommodating thousands of migrants will be exempt from Andy Burnham’s tourist tax on hospitality, The Telegraph can reveal. The Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government said the new unlimited levy would not apply to taxpayer-funded asylum hotels because they were designated “temporary accommodation”. On Wednesday, the Government said that English mayors would be able to impose uncapped “overnight visitor levies” on hotels, holiday lets and bed and breakfasts. The move prompted dismay from the hospitality industry, which had expected limits to be imposed. The Conservative Party said it was “outrageous” that asylum hotels were being exempted from the tax that would hit hard-working families who had saved up for a break.
