Labour’s building pledge in tatters as construction drops to 20-year low
Builders warn ‘rising taxes and regulatory costs’ are limiting their ability to deliver

Labour’s plans to build more than one million new homes are in tatters after construction activity in England dropped to a 20-year low.

Figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government show the number of applications received by councils for planning approval fell to 78,800 between July and September – the lowest level since 2005.

The decline, which is 3pc lower than the same quarter last year, will further undermine the Government’s housebuilding claims.

Labour has insisted it is taking “decisive action” to build 1.5 million homes by 2029, when the next General Election is expected to take place.

Earlier this year, Sir Keir Starmer boosted expectations by pledging to “build, baby, build” as part of his construction boom push.

Industry calls for policy action
However, industry figures say the target is unrealistic because builders remain hampered by rising costs and a lack of support for buyers to stimulate demand.
