The spokesman said he died “peacefully” in hospital on Monday after a short illness. In a statement on behalf of his wife, Joan, and two daughters, Josephine and Julia, the spokesman said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris. He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family.” Middlesbrough-born Rea wrote his most famous song when he was “on the dole” in 1978.
