US mother found dead in Killarney as police hunt ‘asylum seeker’
Jamey Carney, 43, was suffocated at the home she shared with her 13-year-old daughter

Irish police investigating the murder of an American woman are hunting for a man thought to be an asylum seeker.

The body of Jamey Carney, 43, was found at her home in Killarney, which she shared with her daughter, Michaela Carney, 13.

Police, who have not named the suspect, believe he fled the country shortly after Ms Carney’s body was found on Tuesday morning.

According to a pathologist, she had been suffocated. The New York Post reported that the suspect was understood to have been granted “subsidiary protection”, a status which falls short of asylum but accepts that applicants could be at risk if they return to their home country, meaning his passport was returned enabling him to flee the country.

Ms Carney, who came from the outskirts of New York City, moved to Killarney from the US in May 2021.

Police believe the suspect took a bus from Killarney to Dublin and boarded a flight to Istanbul.

The authorities are contacting their counterparts in Turkey and France, where it is believed he lived previously.
