Fly high….die young…
Study links airline careers to higher rates of certain cancer deaths
Airline pilots and flight attendants may face a greater risk of dying from certain radiation-related cancers than workers in other professions, according to new research published in JAMA Internal Medicine that examined millions of death records across the United States. The findings add to a growing body of evidence linking long-term exposure to cosmic radiation at high altitudes with increased health risks among airline crews.
Researchers analyzed U.S. death certificate data from 2020 through 2024, reviewing records covering nearly 13 million people across more than 500 occupations. The study included approximately 14,000 pilots and 7,000 flight attendants, allowing investigators to compare cancer-related deaths among aircrew with those in other lines of work.
