Gerry Adams court case dropped after ‘proceedings develop overnight’
Former Sinn Féin president says legal action by bombing survivors ‘should never have been brought’ after two-week trial ends abruptly

Three victims of Provisional IRA bombings in England will discontinue their damages claim against Gerry Adams, their lawyers have told the High Court.

Mr Adams was being sued for a symbolic £1 in damages by three men injured in the blasts in the 1970s and 1990s.

On the final day of the two-week trial, Anne Studd KC, for the claimants, submitted a draft order asking for the claim to be discontinued after “proceedings developed overnight”.

She said the claimants had been “affected by something” but gave no further details.

The judge, Mr Justice Swift, agreed and ruled that “the claim is discontinued and there shall be no order as to costs”.

It is understood that the claimants discontinued the case because they feared liability for Mr Adams’s legal costs if they lost. They are currently protected from paying his costs, whatever the result, under a cost protection order imposed earlier in the four years of legal action.

Mr Adams’ lawyers claimed this week that the case was an abuse of process. If the judge agreed, it could have meant that the cost protection order was revoked.

It is understood that the claimants agreed to drop the case after consulting their legal team on Thursday evening.
