Socialist Zohran Mamdani elected New York City mayor

Zohran Mamdani, a pro-Palestinian socialist, has been elected the first Muslim mayor of New York City.
The 34-year-old defeated Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor and Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate.
Mr Mamdani tapped into frustrations over skyrocketing living costs by pegging his campaign to sweeping pledges to introduce free buses, free childcare and city-run supermarkets.
His flagship policies include increasing taxes on the city’s wealthiest, raising corporation tax, and promoting affordable housing through freezing stabilised apartment rental rates.
But, he has also stoked controversy with his views on Israel, initially refusing to condemn the phrase “globalise the intifada”, and later saying he would “discourage” the use of the term.
Mr Mamdani said he recognises Israel’s right to exist, but not as a Jewish state and has vowed to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he steps foot in New York.
Although Mr Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, narrowed the race as election day loomed, it was not enough to secure victory.
As of Jan 1, Mr Mamdani will become New York City’s youngest mayor in more than 100 years, and take on one of the most difficult jobs in US politics
