Soldiers do not care about being sustainable, the Army’s climate chief has said.

Brigadier Tim Symonds said that gaining “buy-in” for green initiatives had become a constant battle, adding that neither the average squaddie nor top brass had much interest in net zero.

He said internal audits were more likely to focus on the number of pencils remaining in a stationery cupboard than issues such as energy wastage.

Brig Symonds, who is the Army’s head of efficiency and head of climate change and sustainability, said: “The image of sandals, socks and a beard doesn’t fit in with the stereotype of a soldier. When he wakes up is he thinking, ‘how can I be sustainable today?’ No he isn’t.

“If I was to walk into an Army ward room and say, ‘look, we need to be more green’, it probably wouldn’t go down very well.”

The Ministry of Defence has said it is aiming to cut emissions in line with the UK’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050.

Under the Army’s strategy, set out in 2021, it said it would seek to offset the carbon footprint of its equipment through measures including Project Prometheus, a £200m investment in solar projects that will be located at barracks and other sites.

However, Brig Symonds said there was little interest internally in sustainability efforts.

He added: “Words like decarbonisation are difficult because it sounds like a compromise. Net zero sounds painful and low-carbon sounds like we’ll have to do something that will take away from our fighting power.”
