Yes, four of the 19 hijackers' passports were recovered either from crash debris or left-behind luggage
during the PENTTBOM investigation. [1]
Despite popular conspiracy theories suggesting passports survived the intense fires inside the collapsing towers, the actual recovery locations tell a different story.
Where the Passports Were FoundWorld Trade Center (Flight 11): The passport of Satam al-Suqami was found on the street (near Vesey Street) by a passerby a few blocks away from the towers before they collapsed. It was handed to an NYPD detective. As noted in early reports about the Hijacker passport found blocks from scene, initial blasts often throw lightweight objects like paper and passports clear of the main impact zone before fires or collapses destroy everything else. [1]
: The passports of Ziad Jarrah and Saeed al-Ghamdi were recovered intact in the open debris field at the rural crash site. [1] (https://govinfo.library.unt.edu/911/archive/hearing7/9-11Commission_Hearing_2004-01-26.htm), [2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PENTTBOM)Airport Luggage (Flight 11):
The passport of Abdulaziz al-Omari was found inside a piece of luggage that Mohamed Atta left behind because it did not make the connecting flight from Portland to Boston. [1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satam_al-Suqami), [2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PENTTBOM)
How Paper SurvivedInvestigators and crash experts explain that lightweight items stored inside pockets, wallets, or luggage are frequently ejected during the initial impact. Because they landed away from the roaring infernos and building collapses, they remained intact. The other 15 passports belonging to the hijackers were never found.
