My Merc, 350 SL about 1975 bought by me in 1979. In about 81/2 I was coming back down from skiing on Sunday night when there was a bang and the steering went weird. Still steered but crazily. Next day took it to the garage. My man there tells me some sort of shaft is snapped in half. Two options he says, take out engine , suspension etc and replace shaft. . £5000 minimum. Or, weld it. £50 . Guess which I did. A few weeks later he calls me. I had another just like yours, he says. Called Merc. They say it’s a fault . Shaft should be replaced. They will pay. And they did and while they were about it they did a mod to the front suspension. Bill was £7 grand ( in 1981/2 ) The car was maybe 7 years old at the time. Edited on 25/10/2025 at 22:10:47.
