What is the sensible response? Hang on in quiet desperation or disconnect from it and do your own thing somewhere else. The energy situation will be wide reaching but still places where the govt doesn't actively go out of their way, to get in your way. Nothing lasts forever and these crises will fade. We've had the booms, now for the big bust.
