Parents charged with murder over obesity death of 18-stone son, aged 7 Prosecutors allege couple called vet about their dog’s health on the morning neglected, bedridden boy stopped breathing The parents of a seven-year-old boy have been charged with murder, child abuse and torture after their son weighed more than 18st at the time of his death. Casper O’Brien, seven, died on Nov 4, 2025, after paramedics and police responded to a 911 call from his Michigan home reporting that he was not breathing. The boy died of dilated cardiomyopathy – an enlarged and weakened heart – contributed to by morbid obesity, according to a post mortem examination report. He was bedridden at the time of his death and his diet largely consisted of crisps and chips, the report added. Prosecutors charged the boy’s parents, Jessica O’Brien, 41, and Damien O’Brien, 40, with second-degree murder, three counts of second-degree child abuse, and torture. The defendants face the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the murder and torture charges.
