On 16 June, Messi scored his first World Cup hat-trick in a 3–0 victory over Algeria in Argentina's opening
match of the 2026 World Cup.
The hat-trick brought his total career World Cup goals to 16, tying Miroslav Klose's record for most career World Cup goals.
The match was Messi's 200th international appearance, making him the first male player to play in six World Cups and the second player to score in five World Cups.
At 38 years and 357 days old, he also became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick.
