You need to be aware that the mainline versions of many of the more popular modern Linux distros, such
as Debian and Ubuntu from which Mint is derived, now only support 64-bit x86 processors.
Your 2004 Sony VAIO might well have a 32-bit processor. If so, you will have to either search for a sub-flavour which supports 32-bit, use an older mainline version (which might have a limited support plan), or search for another distro which still target 32-bit processors.
